Income-Generating

A Little Change Can Change a Lot

The Wings of Hope for Africa Foundation strives to combat poverty abroad and at home by funding projects that help address basic needs like food and clothing and breaks down barriers that perpetuate poverty such as lack of education and employable skills. A key factor in our approach is the incorporation of local expertise and leadership in the planning, implementation, and assessment phases to ensure the culturally significant application which allows these projects to thrive long after our direct involvement. Wings of Hope for Africa embraces our privilege to empower communities with the skills, funding, and resources to build self-sustaining futures. Our income-generating programs embody our principles of community empowerment, sustainability, and self-sufficiency. They strive to give vulnerable communities the resources and knowledge to provide for themselves and their family.

We run three income-generating programs with multiple sites in East Africa. Our four programs are: the Community Garden Program, the Learning Centre program, and the Livestock adn Agricultural Goods Donation program. You can read more about these programs below!

Join us in our mission towards a brighter and more equitable future. Contribute to the fight against poverty today.

Community Garden Program

Our project aims to develop community gardens that will provide a reliable source of food and income for vulnerable communities. The project also aims to provide an educational platform, particularly for the younger generation, to learn about sustainable farming practices and the importance of nutrition. The Wings of Hope for Africa team provides the resources and education to vulnerable local families who then manage the garden and own the harvested products. The families the benefit from the garden are changed yearly to maximize the reach of the garden. A locally elected committee is in charge of choosing families and managing the transfer of control. These attributes of the program showcase our self-sufficiency model and promotes sustainability, community empowerment, and self-sufficiency. In the long term, we hope that the project will inspire other communities in Rwanda, contributing to a broader movement towards sustainable agriculture and food security.

We now have two successful community gardens in Kivumu and Buterere, Burundi and are looking for funding to build a third in Rwanda. The community gardens feed and provide a source of income for over 100 families yearly.

Learning Centre Program

Burundi and Rwanda suffer from high unemployment rates and limited opportunities for income generation. This project was conceived to address these issues by providing individuals with practical skills that can lead to employment.

The Wings of Hope for Africa Foundation sets up sewing workshops, provides sewing machines and materials, and hires skilled trainers. The workshops cover basic to advanced sewing techniques, maintenance of sewing machines, and business skills for those who wish to start their own sewing businesses. Graduates of the program can then return to the program as teachers continuing to pass on the knowledge to other vulnerable members of the community.

Our first Learning Centre was established in Kigali, Rwanda in 2017. We now have two successful learning centres in Kigali and Masoro, Rwanda. The program has successfully benefited numerous vulnerable families and is being sustained by the community to this day.

Farm Aid Program

Our program combines the impactful gifts of livestock and essential food supplies to uplift struggling communities. We provide goats, cows, and staples like beans and rice, addressing immediate hunger and fostering lasting change.

Livestock, especially goats and cows, offer families a sustainable income source. Through breeding and selling offspring, households gain financial stability, breaking the cycle of poverty. These animals also enhance local agriculture by enriching soil with their manure, resulting in increased crop yields.

Simultaneously, donated food supplies bolster family diets and can be traded at local markets, increasing income. This dual approach meets both immediate and long-term needs, empowering self-sufficiency and community development.

Support our mission by contributing livestock or food supplies. Together, we can combat hunger, poverty, and promote economic growth in vulnerable communities, offering hope and brighter prospects to those in need.
