Wings of Hope for Africa Health Care and Disease Prevention Programs
Good health is a privilege that not every person is born with. Healthcare education and access are two ways that the Wings of Hope for Africa Foundation works to address this disparity. Learn more about our two programs that work to combat health disparities in East Africa.
Healthcare Card Initiative
Improving healthcare access is crucial in ending poverty. In Burundi, the lack of healthcare access paired with the lack of hygiene supplies, proper nutrition, and clean water result in the high incidence of many chronic health conditions. This significantly impacts developing children with The World Food Programme (WFP) reporting 70 percent of the population living in poverty with alarming food insecurity levels showing 52 percent of children under 5 stunted with higher rates among rural communities.

We began a program to buy government health care cards for vulnerable families in Buterere in 2012. At a cost of only $5 per card, the sponsored individuals are able to access disease management and prevention. This access is life changing. Without a healthcare card, if a person becomes ill they receive no treatment. This can lead to absences in school or employment which can effect future opportunities and income. With a healthcare card, individuals can receive immediate access to healthcare.
Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we have provided healthcare cards to over 700 families since 2012.
Disease Education and Prevention Program
Malaria is rated as the leading cause of childhood mortality in Burundi, with 48 percent of children under five dying of the disease prior to 2011.
The Wings of Hope for Africa foundation also works to educate families about the prevention of malaria and other mosquito-borne infectious diseases. We run projects to distribute mosquito netting as a part of an anti-malaria education project. A single malaria net can be bought for a donation of just $10.
